PondoVac Classic Pond, Pool and Wet Vacuum
For over 10 years, the OASE PondoVac Classic has been cleaning ponds of sludge and large debris. Automatic activation and emptying are possible through an intelligent technology which senses when the collection tank is full, stops the motor, and then resumes once the tank is empty.
The debris collection bag also attaches to the discharge hose of the vacuum so you can recycle the vacuumed water and capture the debris which can then be used as a natural fertilizer. Compact design and built-in handle allow for easy movement and transportation. The PondoVac Classic includes four nozzles to cover all applications. Also included is a clear extension tube (1.6 feet long), which allows easy visual inspection to monitor operation.

Alternating Suction and DischargeThe PondoVac Classic uses a single chamber suction system that automatically alternates between suction and draining. This means that the vacuum fills with material cleaned out from the pond then once the chamber is full, discharges its contents automatically without taking the time to stop and empty it manually. |
Extremely Powerful MotorThe PondoVac Classic utilizes a 1200 watt motor that has a maximum suction height of 6 feet. That means you can use the PondoVac Classic to reach areas of the pond up to 6 feet deep and have full functionality. Cleaning a deep pond has never been easier. |
Multiple Attachments for Multiple JobsThe PondoVac Classic comes standard with a multitude of nozzle attachments. Nozzles range from cleaning through gravel to flat surfaces and even removing string algae. There are no problems that the PondoVac Classic can't handle. |

Customers are mixed about the suction of the outdoor living product. Some mention that it has great suction power, and the sucker time is not bad. However, others say that the sucction is not that strong, the bag to filter out the return water does not attach very well, and that the newest model has a shorter suction hose and electric cord.

However, others say that it's still a back breaking job, the internal filter bag ripped the first 30 seconds of using it, and the extension wand pieces are very flimsy. The brush handle is floppy and makes it difficult to use. Overall, the quality is not very solid.

Now, I’m filtering the water back into the pond, so I tried using the mesh bag that comes with that unit, but that was a no go for what I was sucking up. Found this on amazon—Pinfox 75 Micron Nylon Straining Bag Fine Mesh Food Strainer Filter Bags for Nut Milk, Green Juice, Cold Brew, Home Brewing (25.39" x 18.89"— and it worked PERFECTLY.
Now I must note, if you are going to try and use this to suck up a bunch of leaves, be prepared for lots of clogging in the tube. Just use a net for most of the leaves.
Helpful tips for using the vacuum: when sucking up debris and vacuum shuts of to drain, lift the pipe out of the water and point upwards so what ever is in the pipe doesn’t dump back into pond, wait for vacuum to start back up. Then you want to wait a second until the rubber flapper on the drain hose sucks back in to create a seal. (You will hear a difference in sound in suction). Then put pipe back into water, it works way better when you do that.
If you notice you are not getting good suction, check to make sure nothing is clogged attachment on end of pipe, in pipe, or flapper at drain hose is being held open because of larger debris.
Once you get use to this vacuum and know what it is capable and not capable of doing, you will be happy with it.
As I started to use and learn more about it, I began to sing "I'm only one clog away. It'll be there to ruin my day." They provide four different attachments but only one appeared to be of any use for my pond because the pond has 1/4" size pebbles in it. They provide a dry bag for debris (not sure where/when you would use) and one fabric bag for debris but it doesn't really attach well to anything. There are limited instructions but it is not too hard to figure out how things work.
My first problem was with the only attachment I could use. It is adjustable to prevent pebbles from being sucked in. I put it on the smallest setting but as soon as you start to use it, the adjustment moves and you're sucking up rocks. I duct taped it to the smallest setting and achieved my first clog - the opening gets jammed with the little pebbles and
then no suction. I adjusted it up one, taped it back down and decided I was going to have to let it suck up some pebbles (stay tuned) and just replace then with larger ones some other time.
After I sucked up some leaves and small pieces of bark, I encountered my second clog. This was in the middle of the intake hose and I had to detach and flush for a while.
Things started going better for me and I was making some progress. It has one section of clear pipe so you can see if you are sucking up clear water or black slimy water. It vacuums for 20-30 seconds and then stops to discharge. A lot of people have complained about this feature but I found it nice, after 20 seconds of bending over and moving a hose around, to rest for 10-15 seconds while it drained. I would not spend my money on the higher priced ones that drain as you go - this thing is already overpriced and those are even worse.
After a while, I stopped getting good suction and thought there was another clog. Turns out that the end of the drainage pipe is a flap which has to close (seal) for the whole system to function. It was stuck open with some pebbles. Started going again but noticed it was only vacuuming for about 5-10 seconds before it would stop and drain. I opened the tank to find it was half full of pebbles. Once I cleaned those out, it went back to the 20-30 seconds of vacuuming.
As I was cleaning out the tank, I also found the drainage hose was full of pebbles and soon to be clogged up; so, I cleaned it out as well. I have read reviews where people complained about the length of this drainage hose - I did not find it to be an issue at all. The suction hose is pretty long and you get lots of pipe for extension. I was always able to locate the vacuum and drainage into a reasonable area. I got the impression somewhere (possibly incorrectly) that some people let their drainage go back into the pond. I would never do this and not sure how you even do it. It comes with a cloth bag you can put over the end of the drainage hose but it is just a drawstring which seldom stays on the drainage hose. Also, the muck coming out of the drain was pretty disgusting and I even feel bad for the spots in my yard where it drained; so, I would never let it drain back into my pond.
My pond is about 6 feet by 12 feet by 18 inches deep. It took me 2 1/2 hours to use this first time. I went over each area about 3 times, stirring up the rocks and muck. I would guess my pond is about 33% cleaner now. I would speculate that after about 5 more uses and pebble replacement, my pond will get about 50% cleaner each time I use it.
Feel like it is a little overpriced with multiple pieces of no real use to me. It is difficult to use effectively and then does not really clean too well. It was better than nothing though.

Edit to add it has now been a while since I purchased this and it still works really well. It was a life saver during a heavy rainfall when the sump pump died. All I needed to do was place the vaccum higher so it can discharge into a nearby bathtub while pumping out water from the sump pit. Literally no effort and saved the basement from flooding. Also use it to vacuum our hottub periodically
Apart from that I find that it worked fine ...I will update in about a year from now if Im around
