About Us
Tetra’s tradition of innovation started more than 50 years ago in Melle, Germany, where Dr. Ulrich Baensch founded the company (Tetra Werke) and pioneered the development of flake fish food - an innovation that revolutionized the industry. At the time, growing and harvesting food for your fish was a painstaking process. The advent of flake fish food not only made feeding your pet much easier. It opened the way for more people to own an aquarium. At Tetra, we’re dedicated to helping seasoned hobbyists and beginners alike enjoy a successful, life-long aquatic experience.

Product Description
For the ultimate in convenience and quiet, choose a Whisper In-Tank Filter. These filters mount on the inside of the aquarium, rather than hanging from the outside -- making it possible to place the tank flush against a wall. In-Tank Filters are unusually quiet, since the motor is under the water. Offering the same quality and performance as an external filter, the Whisper In-Tank Filter will function in as little as 2 inches of water -- making it ideal for turtle tanks, or for creating a waterfall inside the tank. The Whisper In-Tank filter features adjusts easily to high or low water levels with mounting suction cups and/or bracket. Each filter comes with one pre-assembled Whisper Bio-Bag filter cartridge.

They are both very quiet. Aside from the sound of the water falling back in.. I mean it sounds like a waterfall. Who doesn't want to hear a waterfall? I love it. This can also be prevented by raising the water level or lowering the filter itself. Basically the closer it is to the water, the quieter it is.
Such a simple device, yet so beautifully sufficient.
The little one stopped working at one point and I thought... welp there you go! Get what you pay for. But nope! Removed the base, pulled out the magnetic spring propeller and tube, cleaned it out and like magic it started right up as soon as I plugged it back in.
Love how easy it is to replace the filters. The filters themselves are great and definitely hold on to some dirtiness.
One thing I'll say is there is quite a bit of unused empty space. I now take advantage by adding some extra media, but I must say that these filters work great even without the extra.
Love this filter and would recommend above any other filter.
But what I thought were just small differences between the two, made a huge difference. First, I LOVED that there weren't any airline tubes that connects to outside air pump, leaving my desk less cluttered. I also liked the way the water fell- in three pretty streams. And most of all, I LOVE how quiet it is! My old filter (because it was attached to the air pump) made so much noise, sometimes it would give me headaches, but this one is super silent.
BUT there is ONE small difference that makes a huge difference- there isn't a "safety guard" at the bottom by the intake area. As many reviewers mentioned, especially those who bought the 4 gallon filter, the filter's intake can kill fish, especially betta fish. If a small part of it's long fin gets caught in the filter intake, the entire fish becomes over powered and gets killed. So, according to Tetra, to avoid this, you have to put a panty hose around the intake. I, thought, okay no big deal, awesome filter, will just put a panty hose around it. So it I did. As soon as i did, the filter's flow slowed down. Didnt think too much of it until I went to clean out my aquarium today, it was so slimy everywhere! My old aquarium never had a problem with things being slimy, ever. Mind you, my new fish has only been in it for a week. When I checked the filter, the panty hose became full of yuck. Basically, the panty hose prevented the dirty water from going through the filter and instead acted as a filter itself KEEPING the dirty things IN the aquarium and preventing from going through the filter. But the panty hose isn't Tetras problem right? But it is. They made a filter that can kill fish, and state that the only way to avoid their product from killing fish is to put pantyhose over it- which stops the filter from working properly. Why couldn't they add a mesh/guard by the intake to BEGIN with? Their old model had one, why did they forget such a vital part?
I included photos of the old Tetra Whisper Filter and the new Tetra Whisper Filter.
***UPDATE (One year later- September 2021):****
I wanted to update this review after solving the issue with the pantyhose situation. Instead of putting a pantyhose, I cut a small piece off of my old mosquito net bed canopy and put that over the filter. And THAT helped so much. No more slime, as the water is able to go through the filter and the net is thick enough to prevent my betta from getting his fins stuck. Also, I'd like to mention that my fish, as it grew older, realized the area around my filter is potentially dangerous and has a strong current, so he doesn't go around there. But obviously, every fish is different. I still love this filter, super quiet and not at all clunky like my old one.
