If you have a Fluval Spec V (or another type of nano tank), I would recommend this heater based on my experience so far. (have been using for close to a month)

The 3 best features:
1. small size with enough power to get the job done
2. the controls are on the outside of the tank making it easy to adjust without ever having to move the heater.
3. it is metal instead of glass. therefore, a lot more durable.

The reasons I did not rate 5 stars:
1. when the heating element turns on/off, the controls make a pretty loud click. This can be a little annoying at night if you are trying to sleep next to it. (all aq. heaters do this, but most are quieter because they are underwater)
2. I wish the cord length between the heater and controller was a bit longer so it would be easier to hide the controller.

Bottom line: This heater is tough and keeps the water of my 5.6 gallon tank evenly heated at 77-78 degreed F. I suspect it would have no trouble with a bit larger tank too (the controls allow form more heat than that). It is convenient to use, and very compact.

side note: the instructions say to only position the heater horizontally, but I have had no trouble leaving it vertical in the hidden pump compartment of my Spec V.

UPDATE: 2 months in the tank and still going strong.

For a water turtle- update: still great after 3 years

The temperature isn't accurate (off by about 7 degrees). The suction cups are standard, but are only so-so.

This works well for an active water turtle and seems to keep the water temperature to his liking. He bangs it around here and there, and it appears to be turtle-proof so far.

Use with a thermometer to ensure an accurate reading.

Update: 3 years of use

It's still working well, even with an active turtle who knocks it around/ off the wall sometimes. It hasn't broken or leaked (like other unnamed popular brands I've used) and still keeps the water warm. I haven't had to adjust the dial to keep up with the age of this heater. I'm pretty satisfied and this is a good investment to keep my water turtle happy.

This is what's left of my tank. It was beautiful...stocked with plants and acara I hatched / raised myself, featherfins, a bristlenose, petricola, etc. We had covid in Jan. No big deal but we were sick. We never get sick. This time, we were sick to the point that it disrupted everything. Typically, I check the temp gauge daily to ensure thermostat is working right but that day, my husband had really gone downhill and we have 3 small children and a lot of pets. I was spread so thin. The only attention the fish got was when I fed them. I never checked the temp gauge but the Finnex had always been reliable so it wasn't a concern. The thermostat on the heater must have failed earlier in the day or the previous evening and slowly been increasing temp. The tank is in the attic... it's an old Victorian home that isn't insulated well and it had been pretty cold. I think that helped in keeping the tank temp tolerable. But that particular day was unusually warm and the attic reached 70°. So nothing was counteracting the Finnex raising the temp over 100°. It boiled my fish and plants overnight. Only some Java fern / moss and anubia roots survived. I was downstairs trying to take care of my husband despite my own sad state of health and just never noticed. Usually, I'm up working late into the night and viewing my tank. I was crushed. Sicker than I've been in my entire life and pulling out all my dead babies and going outside in the rain and wind to dig a hole and bury them all. It sucked. Not sure what caused the thermostat to malfunction but my fish suffered and I will never recommend this product again :(

The HMA 300 titanium 300 watt aquarium heater I bought some time ago. I really like this tank heater it hasn't failed me at all. I like the control on the outside of the tank you don't have to pull the heater from the tank to ajust temp. The only thing is you have to have a good thermometer as the control that you set the temprature with is not right on. But then any heater is not right on. Because you have lighting that changes the water temp during the day as does any sun light that might hit your tank. I would recamend this heat to anyone that has a larger aquarium. I am using this heater in a 55 gallon tank and it holds the temp within a coupel of degress of the setting. And the titanium tube will not brake like the glass heaters. When you first set temp make sure you watch tank temp until it ajust so you don't boil your fish friends. You should do this with any tank heater.I would say set the temp a little low to start with by about 5 dgrees and bring temp up slowly so you don't shock your fish by bring temp up or down to fast.
